He was a huge personality at a time when they were just beginning to die out of the game.

Was an aggressive tackler and very good at it. He knew how to stay (usually) the right side of the laws and to antagonise opponents into reacting.

A very good passer of the ball with decent vision too.

Never the quickest of players.

Had a decent shot on him but very rarely used it.

Another big personality, one who knew his own mind and was not afraid to share his thoughts on the pitch, in the changing room or on the training ground.

An excellent tackler which is why he became so useful in defensive midfield when his role was changed by Houllier.

An excellent passer, especially over longer distances.

Lacked pace.

Had a thunderbolt of a shot which could be past the keeper before he could react.
